There have been a few contenders for the title of world’s most expensive Christmas tree over the years, and this year’s effort – a 12kg solid gold Christmas tree worth $2 million – has just joined the list of the world’s most expensive Christmas trees in history.
A jewellery store in Tokyo’s posh Ginza district collaborated with florist Shogo Kariyazaki to create the lavish Golden Christmas Tree.
The eight foot Christmas tree is made from 12kg of gold and is decorated with ribbons, hearts and orchids – also made of gold.
The value of the gold alone is about $700,000, but the total value of the tree is much higher due to labour costs, said Naoto Mizuki, marketing general manager at the store.
“Considering the time it took to make, the designer and hard work put into it, we can assume that the cost of this tree would be approximately 150 million yen,” he said.
The craftsmen behind the gold tree spent four and a half months to complete the creation.
The tree, however, is not for sale.
It will be on display at the jewellery store in Tokyo through to Christmas Day.
