The greenest Chevrolet ever made, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, will also be one of the most expensive.
The 2011 Volt, the first mass-market electric vehicle from General Motors Co. (GM), will carry a starting price tag of US$41,000 when it is launched in the US later this year, General Motors announced on Tuesday.
The Volt will have an expected range of 340 miles, with 40 miles on pure electricity from the 16-kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack. After that is used up, a gasoline-powered generator kicks in to extend range for another 300 miles.
GM estimates that it can go from zero to 60mph in 10 seconds, although a “sport” mode can increase acceleration at the expense of battery charge.
The Volt is considered to be the most significant vehicle from GM in years, vaulting the company into a competitive position in the race to build greener cars as federal fuel-economy regulations tighten in the US.
The 2011 Chevrolet Volt will appear in Europe in 2012 as the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera.
