Country music star Carrie Underwood was named Entertainer of the Year at the 45th Annual Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards held on Sunday night in Las Vegas.
The 27-year-old songstress beat stiff competition – Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, George Strait and Zac Brown Band – and made history by becoming the first female singer to win the coveted award twice.
“I think I just got makeup all over Brad Paisley,” an excited Underwood said as she went onstage to accept the night’s top honour.
“Thank you, God, praise the Lord.”
The awards show kicked off with a performance by Miranda Lambert and Underwood in which the women were joined by fiddler Charlie Daniels, Brad Paisley and John Fogerty.
Lambert was one of the night’s big winners, taking home awards for album of the year (for Revolution), video of the year (for White Liar), and top female vocalist.
Lady Antebellum won five awards, including top vocal group, record of the year, and song of the year.
Keith Urban, who attended the ceremony with his wife actress Nicole Kidman, was nominated for two awards but missed out on both.
The show included performances by Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, Billy Currington, Kenny Chesney, Laura Bell Bundy, Keith Urban and Taylor Swift – who also missed out on an award on the night.
The 45th ACM Awards ceremony was hosted by Reba McEntire, who suggested that some country artists had drawn ideas about writing songs about cheaters from people in the news.
“I’d like to thank Tiger Woods and Jesse James for inspiring us all,” McEntire said.
