It was 7.28pm on March 17 when English grandad Roger Gillespie realised he had left it too late to write out all his usual Lotto numbers, with just two minutes left before the Lotto draw’s deadline.
So Roger, 59, who had forgotten about the draw until he went out to the newsagent to get some milk, decided to buy a lucky dip ticket instead.
Pensioner George Sturt, who still drives cabs for a living at the age of 76, along with his family of builders, have been named as the winners of a £26.1 million EuroMillions jackpot.
Hailing from Dorking in the UK, the widower plans to give the majority of his fortune away to charity and cancer research after the death of his wife to cancer six months ago.
Mr Sturt, who has eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, is to share the win with three other members of his family syndicate – his daughter Teresa, 44, and sons Colin, 53, and Gary, 51.
After learning the news of his windfall, Mr Sturt walked into the offices of his local newspaper at lunchtime on Monday, announcing he had won the lottery.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found out,” Mr Sturt said.
“I don’t care about having a lot of money – I am just glad that my children will be looked after.”
The former builder said the jackpot, believed to be the fourth-biggest Euromillions won by a British ticketholder, would not translate into his retirement because he enjoyed driving cabs so much.
“I wouldn’t give it up,” he told the Dorking Advertiser.
“I have met too many nice people through it.”
His son Colin said to The Sun: “We had a bit of a drink-up to celebrate but the big knees up will come when the cheque is in the bank.”
“I am honestly still in a state of shock.
“This sort of thing happens to other people and not people like us – it is absolutely crazy.
“We put £4 each into a syndicate each week, but you don’t in your wildest dreams ever think you are going to hit it big like this. I mean it is over six million quid each.”
He continued: “It will be difficult to go back to building houses when you can afford to buy any house that you want.”
The winning ticket included the numbers 11, 26, 29, 49, and 50, with the lucky star numbers 4 and 7.
Mr Sturt was described as a “lovely bloke” and that he lived a humble life working as a taxi driver to make ends meet on his pensioner’s income.

Les Scadding and his wife Samantha Peachey-Scadding, from Caerleon in South Wales, have jumped into joint first place in The National Lottery Rich List, after winning a staggering £45,570,835.50 jackpot in a EuroMillions draw which took place earlier this month.
Les, 58, and Samantha, 38, quietly celebrated their win with a Sunday lunch in their favourite restaurant, after learning of the win on a Saturday evening. Les went to Tesco on Spytty Road in Newport, where he bought his Lucky Dip ticket, to buy some groceries on Saturday evening, and decided to check his EuroMillions ticket on the way out.
“When I asked the people behind the counter to check the numbers, the machine just printed out a pink slip, telling me to contact Camelot. I thought I might have won around £50,000, and I rushed home to tell Samantha,” he recalled.
Les got back to the house, where Samantha was doing some work at her computer. She immediately went online to check their numbers, where it was revealed that two winners in the UK had shared over £90 million.
Les said: “It was a very funny couple of minutes. We just looked at each other while it sunk in, before we got on the phone to Camelot.”
However, despite their windfall, the couple took the staggering news in their stride, and on Sunday went for lunch at their favourite restaurant, The Priory, in Caerleon, with Samantha’s mother.
Les said: “We always go to The Priory, as I know the owner really well, so we wouldn’t have gone anywhere different. We ordered a couple of bottles of Champagne and just had a quiet chat about it all, and tried to let it all sink in.”
Les, who has three grown-up children from his first marriage, is a qualified mechanic, but has worked for many years as a driver for various haulage companies. He is currently out of work, and had been looking for temporary driving contracts until Friday’s incredible win. Samantha runs her own marketing company, and works from home.
She said: “There is quite a lot of pressure involved in running your own business, and I’ve been working 12 hour days recently. This win means I can take my foot off the pedal and relax a bit.”
Les says his first purchase will probably be replacing his Citroen C5 with a Range Rover Sport. The couple also plan to move to a bigger house, but say they will probably stay in South Wales, and will also possibly purchase a holiday home.
Les and Samantha are now joint first in The National Lottery Rich List ahead of two other EuroMillions winners; Glasgow postal worker Angela Kelly who won £35.4m on 10th August 2007 and Brian and Joan Caswell from Bolton who won £24.9million in June this year.
A down-and-out cowboy who had his trailer repossessed and couldn’t pay his taxes lassoed one of the biggest lottery jackpots in history – a $232.1 million Powerball prize.
The news certainly came as a “yee-haw!” for 23-year-old South Dakokta rancher Neal Wanless. He won the mammoth jackpot a month after he bought the lucky ticket in the aptly named town – Winner.

The Mega Millions is a lottery played in 12 U.S jurisdictions. Since it began as The Big Game in 1996 (it adopted its current name in 2002), it is known for its large jackpot prizes and long odds. On March 6, 2007, a Mega Millions jackpot worth $390 million was split by two tickets, one each from Georgia and New Jersey. To date, this is the largest recorded payout (of an annuity-based prize) in the world.
The largest Powerball jackpot was taken by eight co-workers from a Nebraska meat processing plant who jointly bought a single ticket that won them $365 million (annuity value) in the drawing held February 18, 2006.
