A hybrid based on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the Ferrari HY-KERS Hybrid is not only green, but also powerful to match.
This cutting-edge, environmentally-friendly Ferrari has regenerative braking and stop-start, providing for a 36 per cent improvement in fuel consumption (and roughly the same in emissions) over the standard V12 engine. Its 80kg weight gain over the standard V12 engine is neatly offset by an 80bhp upgrade in power via the electric motor.
The Ferrari HY-KERS’ batteries are quite skinny at only 120mm thick, and the motor is neatly integrated with the dual-clutch transmission at the back of the car.
The motor is controlled by an electronics module located beneath the vehicle’s boot floor, without losing an inch of boot space. In fact, the standard 12-volt battery has been taken out of the boot and its function replaced by the module.
But Ferrari fans will have to wait. The Ferrari HY-KERS Hybrid Concept is just that for now – a concept car. It will not be available for sale for at least another five years.
