It was 7.28pm on March 17 when English grandad Roger Gillespie realised he had left it too late to write out all his usual Lotto numbers, with just two minutes left before the Lotto draw’s deadline.
So Roger, 59, who had forgotten about the draw until he went out to the newsagent to get some milk, decided to buy a lucky dip ticket instead.
He ditched all the numbers he has used religiously for the last 15 years – and managed to hit the jackpot worth £2,969,627.
But even after checking the draw’s numbers a few hours later, he did not realise he had won the massive prize.
Roger, who neighbours say has been jobless for several years and is a full-time carer for his granddaughter, said: “To my astonishment, I thought I had five numbers, so I called my daughter to come and check.
“She said, ‘Dad, you’ve not got five numbers – you’ve got six’.”
When quizzed on what his plans were for his windfall, he said: “I may buy a bigger house with a garden so I can let my dogs exercise for themselves.
“But I intend to be terribly sensible and make sure that my nearest and dearest are taken care of.”
Roger’s winning numbers were 16, 30, 34, 37, 41 and 42. The winning ticket was purchased in his hometown of St Just, Cornwall.
