Measure for Measure: Making Coffee Right

Design

We all love coffee in some shape or form, cold or hot, light or dark, and what’s so amazing about it is that there are countless ways to make and enjoy it.

So if you want to go beyond the conventional drip, or are tired of spending too much money on multiple trips to Starbucks (or other local coffee haunt), what is the best thing to do?

Here are some of the most popular and upcoming ways to make the perfect cup.

French Press

This is an excellent all-around way to brew coffee, as it is quick, easy and gives you excellent control over the final outcome. Grind up some whole beans, put it into the container, pour hot water over it and let steep. When you are ready to drink it, simply press down on the handle and push the grinds to the bottom while allowing the coffee mixture to stay on top.  Steep for a short amount of time for a light cup, or steep for several minutes if you like a deeper, darker flavor. www.bodum.com

Chemex

If filtered, ‘drip’ coffee is your preferred type of cup, then you may want to pick up an authentic Chemex coffee maker.  Using one flawlessly sculpted piece of glass, this system perfectly fits a specially designed filter (or one of your choice), and avoids all of the unappealing plastic parts that are a part of a conventional coffee maker.  Much like a French press, this is just you, glass, coffee, and hot water. And it looks great on your kitchen counter too – enough so that it’s in the Museum of Modern Art permanent collection. www.chemexcoffeemaker.com

Espresso

Talk about the perfect shot. The classic way of making espresso is considered by some to still be the best. These instantly recognizable, two-piece, stove-top espresso makers function in a unique matter, where steam moves upwards through a cup of ground espresso beans, and into a top section that gathers the brew. Gas stoves work best, but if you lack one of those, you can also pick up an electric version that does the same. www.bialetti.com

Nespresso

When you’re recovering from a long night of doing… whatever, and just want instant gratification, nothing quite matches what Nespresso has to offer. The pinnacle of ‘pod’ coffee making, space age, single-serving pods are placed into a machine that pumps hot water through it without the bulk and fuss of a traditional espresso machine.  But it’s not just the numerous high-end machines that are well crafted. The espresso pods, coming in a variety of aromas and intensities, are also without equal. And Clooney loves them too, apparently. www.nespresso-us.com

Hario Cold Water Dripper

This method of making coffee hasn’t widely caught on yet, but we think it will soon.  What it does is pass cold – NOT hot – water through finely ground beans, making a highly concentrated solution of coffee that can be used for everything from drinking to cooking.  For the daily coffee drinker, keep it in the fridge until you need it, and then mix with some hot water. The result is a mellow cup of coffee that gives you all of the caffeine kick without any of the acidity and bitterness that you wish to avoid. www.williams-sonoma.com
