For the seventh consecutive year, English Premier League football team Manchester United has reached the number one spot on Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable football teams, with a value of $1.86 billion.

Real Madrid took the number two spot with a value of $1.45 billion, followed by Arsenal at $1.19 billion; Bayern Munich at $1.1 billion; and Barcelona, which dropped one spot to number five on the list, with a value of $975 million.

Overall, the average value of the 20 clubs on the Forbes list increased to $640 million, up 1.3 per cent over last year. The average operating income of the clubs rose 25 per cent to $40 million.

Forbes said it values team clubs based on what they have sold for in the past relative to sales and profits, broadcast agreements and debt from new or pending stadium deals.

The magazine also revealed the highest-paid football players, with Los Angeles Galaxy’s David Beckham once again topping the list, earning $40 million. Although he may have passed his football heyday, he continues to reap in the cash from endorsement deals, adding Pepsi and Electronic Arts to his list of endorsements over the past year.

Christiano Ronaldo of La Liga club Real Madrid was second on the list with $38 million in earnings, and Barcelona FC’s Lionel Messi was third with $32 million.
