A 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic has set a new record to become the most expensive car ever sold.
The Bugatti Veyron may be the world’s most expensive contemporary production car, but even it can’t beat its older sibling.
A private buyer has reportedly splashed out more than $30 million to buy the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic from the Williamson Family. The new record easily beats the $16 million spent on a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa bought at auction last year.
The Bugatti was the first of only three examples of the Atlantic that were built, which no doubt helped boost the sale price.
The car was based on the Aerolithe Electron Coupe that debuted at the 1935 Paris Motor Show. The use of special aluminium alloy, Duralumin, resulted in the dramatic raised seam that runs the length of the bodywork. It also meant the car had to be riveted externally, adding to the car’s unique visual appeal.
“I am extremely pleased to have found the new buyer for the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, one of the world’s most significant and valuable automobiles that has been in a private collection and rarely seen during the past four decades,” says David Gooding, the president and founder of Gooding & Company, which brokered the sale.
“It has been a great pleasure to work with the Williamson Family and Trust in this important endeavour.”
