Porsche stole the show at this year’s Detroit Motor Show, unveiling its all-new 918 RSR.
The 767bhp race car is a cross between Porsche’s 918 Spyder, revealed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, and the 911 GT3 R Hybrid.
With its striking orange stripes, the 918 RSR bears the number 22, which was the winning number of the Porsche 917 K that won Le Mans in 1971 with an average speed of 138mph (222kph) – an unbeaten record up until last year.
The 918 RSR boasts a V8 petrol engine and two electric motors with a combined power of 767bhp, affirming Porsche’s market lead in hybrid racecars.
The car’s electric energy comes from a flywheel in the passenger’s seat linked to a motor to turn electric energy into flywheel energy and vice-versa. The flywheel spins to 36,000rpm.
Currently, there is no racing category the 918 RSR is eligible for, but Porsche’s Wolfgang Duerheimer says Porsche is talking to authorities about making rules to fit the car.
“We think there should be a new impulse in racing, new technologies,” he said.
There is no word yet on when or how many 918 RSRs will be built or how much they will cost, but we’re willing to bet they’ll be very expensive!
