A big thumbs up to Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock who donated $1 million to the American Red Cross this week to aid victims of the earthquake and tsunami crisis in Japan.
The contribution came after the US aid agency announced it had given $10 million to the Japanese Red Cross to help after last Friday’s devastating quake.
“The American Red Cross is extremely grateful for this generous support from Sandra Bullock and her family,” it said in a statement.
“This contribution is vitally important as the Red Cross works to provide critical assistance and essential relief items in this time of urgent need for so many people in Japan.”
Bullock’s is the largest celebrity donation to the Red Cross since the disaster, although the charity has received other anonymous donations, it reported.
And it’s not the first time she has donated to disaster relief efforts. Last January, the actress gave $1 million to help victims of Haiti’s earthquake. She is also a strong supporter of the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans, after it was hit by Hurricane Katrina.
Other celebrities have used social media to encourage fans to support the Red Cross, raising $2.6 million in text message donations so far.
