The world’s largest auctioneer, Christie’s, has announced record first-half art sales of £2.2 billion, an increase of 13 per cent over the same period of 2011.
Christie’s posted sales of £1.8 billion in the first six months of 2012, up seven per cent compared to a year ago, while private art sales increased by a staggering 53 per cent to £413 million, according to Reuters.

The first ready-made personal computer, an Apple 1, has sold for $374,500 at a Sotheby’s auction.
The computer, which came only as a naked motherboard, is reportedly one of only six working examples of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak’s first Apple hardware, according to The Telegraph.

The historical Beau Sancy diamond was bought by an anonymous bidder for $9.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva on Tuesday.
The Beau Sancy is a 34.98 carat diamond which was passed among the royal families in France, England, Prussia and the Netherlands. It was sold by the Royal House of Prussia, the line of descendants that once ruled Prussia, according to Associated Press.

The auction record for a painting by acclaimed British artist Sir Stanley Spencer was broken twice within minutes at Sotheby’s in London last week.
Sir Spencer’s Workmen in the House, which was estimated to be worth around the £2 million mark, sold for a record £4.7 million before another of his works, Sunflower and Dog Worship (pictured), with an estimated value of £1.5 million, sold for a record £5.4 million.

A diamond and emerald tiara believed to have belonged to Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, sold for a record 11.28 million Swiss francs (£7.8 million) to an anonymous buyer at Sotheby’s in Switzerland.
The sparkling tiara, which German prince Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck commissioned for his second wife Katharina, was estimated to fetch from £3 million to £6 million, but ended up selling for a world record price.

The incredible price tag was 40 times the initial estimate and an auction record for any work of art from Asia, the auctioneer that sold it said.

Today, one of the most impressive and rare blue diamonds in the world is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong for an estimated $4.6-$5.9 million.
The 5.18 carat vivid blue, internally flawless, pear-shaped diamond is the first blue diamond from the De Beers Millennium Collection to go up for sale since going into a private collection following the year 2000 millennium celebrations.
