Action-adventure film The Avengers has smashed the US box office record for its opening weekend, raking in a massive USD200.3 million.
The previous US box office record holder for best opening weekend was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which opened in July 2011 and earned USD169 million in its opening weekend, according to the BBC.
Other films included in the top five biggest US box office openers are The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3.
The Dark Knight, which starred Christian Bale as Batman, took USD158 million at the US box office in its opening weekend in 2008, while Spider-Man 3 took USD151 million.
Both comic superheroes will again be featured in cinemas later this year with the releases of The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man.
The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon, failed to top Harry Potter‘s opening day earnings record of USD91 million, but still beat its takings over the following two days.
The Avengers has so far raked in USD641 million worldwide.
