The King’s Speech leads the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards with 12 nominations, including best picture and best actor for Colin Firth.
Firth’s co-stars in the film, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush, are also up for best supporting actor awards for their performances in the Tom Hooper drama about King George VI’s struggles to overcome a stutter on the eve of the second world war.
After news of his nomination, Firth said: “Not used to this much joy or this much champagne at this hour.”
The Coen brothers’ Western remake True Grit came in second on the list with 10 nominations, while The Social Network and Inception both scored eight Oscar nods.
All up, there are 10 films contending for the coveted best picture Oscar – The King’s Speech, True Grit, The Social Network, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The Fighter, 127 Hours, Toy Story 3, Winter’s Bone and Black Swan.
The nominations for best actor are Colin Firth for The King’s Speech, Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network, James Franco for 127 Hours, Javier Bardem for Biutiful and Jeff Bridges for True Grit.
The Social Network picked up the award for best film at this year’s Golden Globes.
Eisenberg, who plays Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the film, said in a statement:
“To be nominated for this award, especially alongside these other actors, is truly astonishing and a great honour for me.”
Golden Globe winner Natalie Portman is one of the contenders in the best actress category, for her performance in the ballet thriller Black Swan.
Portman will be up against Annette Bening, for gay parenting film The Kids Are All Right, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone and Michelle Williams for romantic drama Blue Valentine.
The best supporting actress category is perhaps the most competitive of all the awards this year, with Melissa Leo, who won the Golden Globe for The Fighter, facing strong challenges from co-star Amy Adams, 14-year-old newcomer Hailee Steinfeld for True Grit, Helena Bonham Carter for The King’s Speech and Jacki Weaver for Animal Kingdom.
Meanwhile, the nominees in the best supporting actor category are John Hawkes for Winter’s Bone, Jeremy Renner for The Town, Mark Ruffalo for The Kids Are All Right, Geoffrey Rush for The King’s Speech and Christian Bale for The Fighter.
The 83rd Academy Awards will take place on February 27.
