M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender topped the winner’s list at the 31st Annual Razzie Awards on Saturday.
The film swept away the competition, picking up five Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Picture; Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3D; Worst Director; Worst Screenplay; and Worst Supporting Actor for Jackson Rathbone, who also starred in another Razzie Award-nominated film, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
Sex and the City 2 was another big “winner” at this year’s Razzies, which recognise the worst achievements in film over the past year. The film scooped up three awards, including Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel; Worst Actress – won collectively by the four main stars of the film, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon; and Worst Ensemble for the film’s entire cast.
Ashton Kutcher won the award for Worst Actor for his roles in Killers and Valentine’s Day, while Jessica Alba won Worst Supporting Actress for her roles in Little Fockers, Machete, The Killer Inside Me and Valentine’s Day.
But despite being crowned Worst Picture, The Last Airbender – a fantasy action film about a boy who can control the elements of air, fire, earth and water – raked in $320 million at the global box office last year.
The film’s director, M. Night Shyamalan – who earned an Oscar nomination in 1999 for The Sixth Sense – adapted the film from the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
“He [Shyamalan] managed to take a cartoon property and make it even less lifelike by making it with real actors,” said Razzies founder John Wilson.
“Most people who like the show, and this would include my 14-year-old son, hated the movie. It made no sense whatsoever.”
No winners were present to accept their awards at this year’s ceremony.
