Before you die: Top golf courses to play

Entertainment

Before multi-million dollar endorsements. Before Tiger Woods-scale scandals. Golf was just a game between man and nature, played with sticks and a ball.

There is indeed something majestic and romantic about the sport, and countless golfing legends, renowned architects and the wealthiest developers have endeavored around the world to create magnificent golf courses to humble all that have come before.

But which are the top places you may want to visit before you die? Check these out …

UAE – The Montgomerie Dubai

Dubai – a true oasis created out of human ingenuity – should already be on your list of places to go party prior to checking out from this dimension.  So if you’re going to play some golf, you better get yourself to one of the greatest courses ever created at The Montgomerie Dubai resort.  With over 264-acres of challenging terrain, this will be an unforgettable experience for anyone who cherishes the sport – and ruin all other courses for novices. And all of the multi-star amenities don’t hurt either. www.themontgomerie.com/golf/champcourse/champcourse.aspx

Indonesia – Mount Merapi Golf Course

Ever wonder what it would be like to play on the slopes of an active volcano? Well if you head to Yogiyakarta you can, as the Merapi Golf Course is within spitting distance to the mouth of this giant.  In October of 2010, the volcano erupted (or just hiccupped) so there was some damage to the course.  Whether that stops you or not is entirely up to how daredevil-ish you are, but always keep one eye on that mountain as you swing, we say. www.yogyes.com/en/yogyakarta-tourism-object/sport-and-adventure/merapi-golf/

Greenland – Uummannaq

After sweating over the volcano, you may want to cool off a bit.  In that case, jet over to Greenland and try playing in the snow and ice.  Here, you’ll be hitting colored golf balls into a terrain that is entirely dictated by the climate and amount of snowfall of the season and don’t let them tell you any different – there is no way you will be getting into your shorts and sandals here.  The upside – all that alcohol you’ll be drinking to stay warm. www.greenland-guide.dk/icegolf

South Africa – The Legend Golf and Safari Resort

This is where you can truly have a golf experience – situated within one of South Africa’s greatest nature conservancies.  While the sweeping setting is ideal for golfing, most visitors will immediately remark about the so-called 19th hole – the ‘Extreme 19th hole’ – which requires golfers to go by helicopter to the top of a cliff and launch their ball approximately 0.5km down to the green.  Once you’re done, you can also go on Safari and bask in the African wilderness… maybe bring a club or two with you just in case. www.legendlodges.co.za/legend-golf-safari-resort

Scotland – St. Andrews Links

No golf tour around the world would be complete without a stop in the country that started it all – Scotland.  Head to St. Andrews Links, and you can indeed play on a bit of history. Featuring seven courses for all skill levels, this is nothing short of a golfing paradise, where the terrain has remained virtually the same for centuries.  You will quickly see how the people who invented the game got their inspiration. www.standrews.org.uk

Are there other breathtaking golf courses around the world, or just around the corner from the ones we focused on above? Of course! But now it’s your job to tell us what those are in the comments.
