It was a night to remember for Twilight fans and royal family fans alike at this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards in London on Sunday.

As Prince William was announced BAFTA’s new President and Kristen Stewart won the “Orange Rising Star” award with Robert Pattinson and other Twilight co-stars in the audience.

While Twilight’s hot couple Kristen and R-Patz arrived separately on the red carpet, both to loud cheers, it was young royal Prince William who caused the biggest frenzy on the way in to the star-studded ceremony at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Prince William attended the event without his girlfriend Kate Middleton, and opened the ceremony with a heartfelt speech on his new BAFTA appointment as President.

“This is such a privilege for me,” he said.

“I have to say, there is nothing better than going to see a really good film so this is a great personal thrill for me.”

Prince William follows in the footsteps of his grandfather in accepting the high-profile arts role.

The big winner of the evening was The Hurt Locker, which was also one of this year’s top-nominated Academy Awards contenders, alongside the sci-fi box office smash Avatar.  The Iraq war drama, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, nabbed six awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Meanwhile, Avatar only picked up two technical awards for Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.

But the big surprise of the evening was Twilight star Kristen Stewart, who picked up the Orange Rising Star Award, which is awarded by public vote.

Colin Firth also scooped the Leading Actor award for his role in A Single Man and thanked his friend and director, Tom Ford, for believing in him.

“An encounter with Tom Ford is to come away feeling resuscitated, a little more worldly, better groomed, more fragrant and more nominated than one has ever been before.”

Carey Mulligan won the Leading Actress award for An Education. The British-born actress tearfully told reporters that the BAFTA recognition meant “everything to me”.
