Just when you think you’ve seen it all on eBay – along comes another crazy auction…
The penalty spot at Ewood Park from which Wayne Rooney scored the goal that secured Manchester United their 19th Premier League championship title is up for auction on eBay.
Blackburn Rovers fan Eddie Maxwell came up with the money-spinning idea shortly after the game and asked the club if he could dig up the small patch of turf.
The father-of-two also dug up the centre spot and is hoping he can use any money raised to support his local Sunday League side, King Edward FC.
Maxwell said: “At first I was just thinking of taking the centre spot because any Rovers fan would be interested in that but then after the Manchester United match I wanted the penalty spot as well.
“It is a piece of football history – maybe Rooney would be interested in buying it.”
Rooney’s goal from the penalty spot helped United secure their record-breaking title.
In 2004, the football which David Beckham blasted over the bar in England’s European Championship shootout defeat to Portugal attracted bids running into the millions after it was put up for sale on eBay.
At the time of writing, 215 bids had been placed on the penalty spot with six days left till the end of the auction. The highest bid is fast approaching six figures.
